What a God!

Ponder the achievement of God.
He doesn’t condone sin, nor does he compromise his standard.
He doesn’t ignore our rebellion, nor does he relax his demands.
Rather than dismiss our sin, he assumes our sin and, incredibly, sentences himself.
God’s holiness is honored. Our sin is punished…and we are redeemed.
God does what we cannot do so we can be what we dare not dream: perfect before God.

Chap 6 Calling the Corpses

Romans 3:21-26

Rom 3:12 NCV All have turned away. Together, everyone has become useless.
There is no one who does anything good; there is not even one.”
19 We know that the law’s commands are for those who have the law. This stops all excuses and brings the whole world under God’s judgment.

What separates us from God is sin. We aren’t strong enough to remove it, and we aren’t good enough to erase it. For all of our differences, there is one problem we all share. We are separated from God.

The solution is not more government or education.. Nor is the solution more religion.. We don’t need more religion; we need a miracle. We don’t need someone to disguise the dead; we need someone to raise the dead.

God’s solution for our malady is starkly simple.

Rom 3:19 NCV We know that the law’s commands are for those who have the law. This stops all excuses and brings the whole world under God’s judgment,
20 because no one can be made right with God by following the law. The law only shows us our sin.
21 But God has a way…

Jesus Christ.

Chap 7 Where Love and Justice Meet

Romans 3:21-25

Rom 3:21 NCV But God has a way to make people right with him without the law, and he has now shown us that way which the law and the prophets told us about. 22 God makes people right with himself through their faith in Jesus Christ.

In Paul’s letter all efforts at salvation have been from earth upward.

Our pleas of ignorance are inexcusable (Rom 1:20). Our comparisons with others are impermissible (2:1). Our religious merits are unacceptable (2:29). The conclusion is unavoidable: self-salvation simply does not work. Man has no way to save himself.

But Paul announces that God has a way. Where man fails God excels. Salvation comes from heaven downward, not earth upward.

Salvation is God-given, God-driven, God-empowered, and God-originated. The gift is not from man to God. It is from God to man. 1 John 4:10

Grace is created by God and given to man.
Isa. 45:1

Christianity is set apart from any other religion in the world. John Stott: “Npo other system, ideology or religion proclaims a free forgiveness and a new life to those who have done nothing to deserve it but deserve judgment instead.” (Stott, Romans: God’s Good News for the World, pg 118)

John MacArthur: “As far as the way of salvation is concerned, there are only two religions the way has ever known or will ever know – the religion of divine accomplishment, which is biblical Christianity, and the religion of human achievement, which includes all other kinds of religion, by whatever names the may go under.”

Every other approach to God is a bartering system; if I do this, God will do that.

Christianity has no whiff of negotiation at all. Man is not the negotiator; indeed, man has no grounds from which to negotiate.

We can summarize the first three and one-half chapters of Romans with three words: we have failed.

God has a away to make people right with him (Rom 3:21).

God’s highest dream is not to make us rich, not to make us successful or popular or famous. God’s dream is to make right with him.

2 Cpr 5: 19 NCV God was in Christ, making peace between the world and himself.. 21 Christ had no sin, but God made him become sin so that in Christ we could become right with God.

The perfect record of Jesus was given to you, and your imperfect record was given to Christ.

1 Peter 3:18

By his perfect life Jesus fulfilled the commands of the law. By his death he satisfied the demands of sin. Jesus suffered not like a sinner, but as a sinner.

Heb10:14 NCV With one sacrifice he made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

Chap 8 Credit where credit is due

Romans 3:27-4:25

A person is made right with God through faith, not through obeying the law. Rom 3:28

Rom 3:24 NCV and all need to be made right with God by his grace, which is a free gift. They need to be made free from sin through Jesus Christ. 25 God sent him to die in our place to take away our sins. We receive forgiveness through faith in the blood of Jesus’ death…

The cost of our sins is more than you can pay. The gift of your God is more than ou can imagine.

Rom 3:31 NCV So do we destroy the law by following the way of faith? No!

The concern here is motivation. If I am not saved by my works, then why work? If I am not saved by the law, then why keep the law? If I am not saved by what I do, then why do anything?

Grace is risky. There is a chance that people will take it to the extreme. There is the possibility that people will abuse God’s goodness.

Romans 6:1

Grace promoting evil? Mercy endorses sin? What a horrible idea!

Someone who sees grace as permission to sin has missed grace entirely.

Mercy understood is holiness desired.

Titus 2:14

Grace fosters an eagerness for good. Grace doesn’t spawned a desire to sin. If one has truly embraced God’s gift, he will not mock it.

The law can show us where we do wrong, but it can’t make us eager to do right. Grace can.

Faith causes us to be what the law truly wants. Rom 3:31

Abraham made one decision that changed his eternal life.

Rom 4:3 MSG “..He trusted God to set him right instead of trying to be right on his own.”

Rom 4:6 NCV David said the same thing. He said that people are truly blessed when God, without paying attention to their deeds, makes people right with himself.
7 “Blessed are they whose sins are forgiven, whose wrongs are pardoned.

We must not see grace as a provision made after the law had failed. Grace was offered before the law was revealed. Indeed, grace was offered before man was created.

1 Peter 1:18-20

God’s grace is older than your sin and greater than your sin.

Chap 9 Major League Grace

Romans 5:1-3

Rom 5:1 NIRV 1 Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. 2 Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.

Peace with God. What a happy consequence of faith!

“Has brought us into..” in Greek word means “to usher into the presence of royalty.”

Eph 2:18; 3:12

Matt 10:32 NCV “All those who stand before others and say they believe in me, I will say before my Father in heaven that they belong to me.

2 Tim 2:13 NCV If we are not faithful, he will still be faithful, because he must be true to who he is.

Chap 10 The Privilege of Paupers

Romans 5:6-8

Rom 5:8 NCV But God shows his great love for us in this way: Christ died for us while we were still sinners.

Psalm 103:9 NCV He will not always accuse us, and he will not be angry forever.

10 He has not punished us as our sins should be punished; he has not repaid us for the evil we have done.

11 As high as the sky is above the earth, so great is his love for those who respect him.

12 He has taken our sins away from us as far as the east is from west.

13 The LORD has mercy on those who respect him, as a father has mercy on his children.

14 He knows how we were made; he remembers that we are dust.

You are a partner with Christ in life. Col 3:4

You possess every spiritual blessing possible. Eph 1:3

This is the gift offered to the lowliest sinner on earth.

John 1:16

Rom 11:33 MSG Have you ever come on anything quite like this extravagant generosity of God, this deep, deep wisdom? It’s way over our heads. We’ll never figure it out.

34 Is there anyone around who can explain God?
Anyone smart enough to tell him what to do?

35 Anyone who has done him such a huge favor
that God has to ask his advice?

36 Everything comes from him;
Everything happens through him;
Everything ends up in him.
Always glory! Always praise!
Yes. Yes. Yes.
